Stories: In the Storms

Debbie teaches Bible study every week for Mission Arlington at an East Arlington apartment complex.
This weekend, in face of the impending arrival of hurricane Gustav, Debbie made a quick trip to Beaumont to retrieve her 84 year old mother.
Debbie and her mother returned home quickly, so that she wouldn’t miss being with the people at her Bible study. The following note is from Debbie about her experience:
Note from Debbie
We talked about storms - what storms were in the Bible, where was God, what did people do? The kids were naming Noah’s Ark, Moses dividing the red sea, Jonah, Jesus walking on the water and calming the wind.
We prayed for the hurricane people, and showed them what Mom brought out — a photo of my dad, and about what was important in their lives. They all drew pictures of a stormy situation and had to put God in.
Hector drew Jesus holding a man’s hand in a river and reaching out to pull him up. He explained the river was sin. The two teen boys agreed to pray aloud for the first time.
As I was driving into the storm area, and saw hundreds of lights coming out in the opposite direction, it was a weird feeling . I said that’s how I feel sometimes as a Christian at my Bible study ministry — others all going in the opposite way with all their “stuff” — motorhomes, boats, motorcycles, suitcases, pet carrierss, etc., and yet I know I am going in the right direction, and I have a purpose.
Then God reminded me that the lights could stand for all the cloud of witnesses who have gone before me throughout history and are there to encourage me to keep going.
The Mission Arlington family is grateful for faithful teachers like Debbie who are making a difference.
